The Hst View of the Narrow Line Region of Seyfert Galaxies

چکیده

HST observations provided us with the spatial resolution required to explore in detail the properties of the Narrow Line Region of Seyfert galaxies. In Seyferts with extended radio structures the HST images revealed a very close connection between radio and optical line emission. We interpret this result as strong evidence that the line-emitting gas is compressed by the shocks created by the passage of the radio-emitting outflow. The increase in the density due to the shocks causes the line emission to be highly enhanced in the region where this interaction occurs. Spectroscopy of the NLR confirms the presence of a strong interaction: in the region co-spatial with the radio-jets, the gas velocity field is highly perturbed and shows two velocity systems separated by as much as 1700km s. In several locations the split lines form an almost complete velocity ellipsoid, implying that we are seeing an expanding shell of gas. We conclude that the morphology and the kinematics of the NLR in these sources are dominated by the presence of radio outflows, which might also have a significant role in the ionization balance. Observations of Seyfert galaxies represent a unique tool to study energetics and evolution of ISM/jets systems.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

A Hubble Space Telescope Survey of Extended [oiii]λ5007å Emission in a Far-infrared Selected Sample of Seyfert Galaxies: Observations

We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission for a sample of 60 Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1’s and 38 Seyfert 2’s), selected based on their far infrared properties. The observations for 42 of these galaxies were done in a snapshot survey with WFPC2. The remaining 18 were obtained from the HST archive, most of which were observed with the same configuration. The...

The Difference between the Narrow Line Region of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 Galaxies

This paper presents a comparative study of emission line ratios of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. It includes a literature compilation of the emission line fluxes [OII]λ3727Å, [NeIII]λ3869Å, [OIII]λ5007Å and [NeV]λ3426Å, as well as 60μm continuum flux, for a sample of 52 Seyfert 1’s and 68 Seyfert 2’s. The distribution of the emission line ratios [OII]/[NeIII]...

The Narrow-line Region of Seyfert Galaxies: Narrow-line Seyfert 1s versus Broad-line Seyfert 1s

It is known that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the nuclear radiation of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) has different shapes with respect to that of ordinary broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s), particularly in wavelengths of X-ray. This may cause some differences in the ionization degree and the temperature of gas in narrow-line regions (NLRs) between NLS1s and BLS1s. This...

Hst and Vla Observations of Seyfert 2 Galaxies: the Relationship between Radio Ejecta and the Narrow Line Region1

We present HST/WFPC2 images, in narrow-band filters containing the [O III] 5007 and H +[N II] emissionlines and their adjacent continua, of a sample of seven Seyfert 2 galaxies selected on the basis of possessing either extended emission-line regions in ground-based observations or a hidden broad-line region in polarized light. Six of the galaxies have also been observed with the VLA to obtain ...
